Redshirt freshman Cyler Miles saw the first meaningful snaps of his career last week against UCLA after senior Keith Price injured his shoulder and has prepared this week as if he will be the starter for the UW's game against Oregon State on Saturday

Miles ready to go for Huskies if needed

Keith Price was still smiling Wednesday morning when he met with the media. Even when Price is injured, that smile doesn’t leave his face. “I’m good, just rehabbing like crazy and doing the best I can to try to get back out here to help my team,” Price said. “Hopefully, I’ll be able to spin the ball pretty good [Thursday]. I haven’t even attempted a pass all week, so we’ll see how it goes.” With three days left until they play Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore, head coach Steve Sarkisian has yet to decide who will start as quarterback for the Washington football team Saturday night. Price, who injured his right shoulder in last Friday’s 41-31 loss to UCLA, has not thrown a ball since leaving that game just before halftime. He will be tested Thursday at practice, and Sarkisian will make a decision afterward as to who will start Saturday. In the meantime, the Huskies have been practicing as if redshirt freshman Cyler Miles will start against the Beavers. Miles came in to replace Price at halftime against the Bruins and completed 15-of-22 passes with a pair of touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. In many ways, this week is similar to the week leading up to the UW’s game against California on Oct. 26. There were questions surrounding Price’s availability for that game all week, with Miles taking the majority of the first-team reps as Price recovered from an injured thumb. But Price got the start against the Golden Bears, and he led the Huskies to a 41-17 victory. However, after coming out of Friday’s game, it seems that Price’s shoulder injury is more serious than his thumb was, so the possibility of Miles starting could be bigger this weekend. Sarkisian said the Huskies have developed a plan for Miles should he be the starter, just as they had one ready had he started against the Golden Bears. “He’s a different player than Keith, so we have to tailor some things a little bit differently to him,” Sarkisian said. “But, all in all, he can handle our offense. So I don’t feel like we have to minimize or try to do more with him.” Miles has said he prepares every week as if he was going to be the starter, so this week’s situation does not change much in terms of how he approaches practice each day. “It’s the same preparation, but of course, there are small feelings of anxiousness and excitement,” Miles said. “It’s a learning experience for me, and I’m excited to be here and take the reps.” Reach reporter Daniel Rubens at sports@dailyuw.com.
