Solid first round lands Huskies towards top of the leaderboard

Fighting through bad weather conditions, the Washington women's golf team got off to a good start after the first round of play at the NCAA championships yesterday. The 10th-ranked Huskies carded a team score of 292 to finish the day at 8-over par during the opening round at the Meadows Golf Course in Sunriver, Ore. They currently sit tied for fifth place with top-ranked Duke. "I thought we played very solidly and were pretty consistent throughout our lineup," coach Mary Lou Mulflur said. "We have really struggled early in tournaments this year and it was nice to get off to a good start and not shoot ourselves in the foot the first day." A pair of southern California schools sits atop the leader board as No. 14 USC finished the round in first place at 3-over par and No. 2 UCLA trails by one stroke to take second. "The conditions were very cold and windy down here and not exactly ideal golf conditions, but they didn't let it bother them," Mulflur said about her team. "They didn't worry about anything they can't control, and I think that they did a good job at focusing on what they could control." With good play up and down the lineup, sophomore Amber Prange and junior Paige Mackenzie led the UW on the individual leader board. Prange has continued solid play in the post season; she and Mackenzie are tied with seven others for 12th place at one-over par. Another junior-sophomore combination are tied for a place among the top-40 individuals -- Sung Ea Lee and Courtney McCracken each finished the day carding 3-over par with 74 to sit in 35th place. "We need to stay in our own game and stay within ourselves, never get too up, and never getting too down," Mulflur said. "I think this is one of those tournaments where the team that is the toughest is going to win, and I think I have a pretty tough group. They very rarely let things get to them." The only Husky to struggle on the day was freshman Kim Shin who carded a disappointing 8-over par with 79. Currently leading the tournament individually is Pepperdine's Carolina Llano who has a two-stroke lead at 2-under par. Second round play continues today with tee times starting at 9 a.m.
