UW defense holds No. 3 Stanford scoreless in double-overtime tie

With its eighth shutout in 11 games, the Washington men’s soccer team’s defense continues to prove they are a force to be reckoned with. After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Huskies (5-2-4, 1-1-1 Pac-12) walked away with their first conference draw of the season on the road against No. 3 Stanford. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Ryan Herman recorded his sixth shutout of the season and a career-high 11 saves on the night. The strong backline for the UW, with sophomore Garret Jackson filling in for freshman Quentin Pearson, who served a one-game suspension after receiving a red card in last weekend’s matchup with UCLA, held tight to block shots from an energetic Stanford offense. The Cardinal (8-1-0, 1-0-1 Pac-12) had nine corners on the night, creating plenty of chances to score off set pieces, while the UW only had one for the game. The Huskies were missing senior midfielder James Moberg and junior forward Mason Robertson due to injuries, while Stanford was without its star forward Jordan Morris, who is playing with the U.S. under-23 national team for Olympic qualifiers this weekend. However, Stanford had a number of players with shots on goal, ending with 28 shots in total and 11 on target. Senior Ty Thompson and redshirt sophomore Eric Verso led with five shots each for the Cardinal. The Huskies will travel a short distance north to face California in Berkeley on Sunday at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks.
