The Washington men's tennis team clinched a share of the Pac-10 title for the first time in program history on Saturday.
After falling in doubles play, the No. 11 Huskies (18-4 overall, 6-1 Pac-10) responded by winning all six singles matches to defeat Oregon 6-1.
On the same day in Los Angeles, No. 7 UCLA beat No. 19 USC, meaning the Bruins and the UW will split the Pac-10 title.
"It was certainly thrilling for us to win our share of the Pac-10 championship," coach Matt Anger said. "I feel really good inside for all the people who are invested in the program, and I feel great for the guys this year because every match was close."
The match began in the Ducks' favor as they won the doubles point, taking two of the three matches. Washington's only doubles victory came from Alex Slovic and Daniel Chu who continued their winning ways with an 8-2 victory over Markus Schiller and Vlad Pino.
"I felt like our doubles was okay," Anger said. "I would have liked to have done better, but I didn't think our play was as poor as the scores might indicate."
However, the match turned as singles play began.
Slovic got the ball rolling for the Huskies as he defeated Schiller 6-1, 6-2. The match was clinched when freshman Andy Kuharszky beat Pino 7-6, 7-5.
"All six guys out there were able to contribute," Anger said. "There were some good wins all the way down the line."
All three seniors won their final regular season matches. Pete Scharler beat Arron Spencer 6-4, 3-6, 7-6, and Christoph Palmanshofer swept Manuel Cost 6-2, 6-2.
Alex Vlaski won the marquee matchup of the day against No. 14 Sven Swinnen 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Swinnen scored the only point for Oregon when the two teams played earlier this season and he beat Vlaski.
Washington returns to action next weekend for the Pac-10 championships in Ojai, Calif.
