UW holds off valiant effort by Stanford

Last season, the Washington women's volleyball team went down to the Bay Area to face Stanford on a 22-game winning streak. After the night was over, the Cardinal came out victorious, winning a come from behind thriller 3-2, handing the Huskies their first loss of the season. This time around, the UW protected its undefeated season and left Palo Alto on a 14-game run to start the season. The second-ranked Huskies (14-0 Overall, 5-0 Pac-10) cemented themselves at the top of the Pac-10 standings with a sweep over No. 13 California and No. 3 Stanford this weekend. On Saturday, Stanford (16-2, 5-1) could not stop the Washington attack at Maples Pavilion. Led by All-American sophomore Christal Morrison, the UW hit .355 on the night to take the match in four games. Stanford came out strong in the first game, but the Huskies responded and Morrison's kill grabbed a 30-24 victory for Washington in game one. Game two was closer as it was even between the two squads at 28-all, but two consecutive points by the Huskies gave them a 30-28 game win and a 2-0 lead in the match. Game three was a close one, but, in the end, the Cardinal squeaked out a 32-30 victory, putting the match at 2-1. In last year's match between the two squads in Palo Alto, the Huskies took an early 2-0 game lead in the match before the eventual national champion Stanford came back to win 3-2. There would not be a repeat performance this time as the UW came into the fourth game rolling on all cylinders, never trailing in the game. An 8-1 run to close out the game gave Washington a 30-15 game four win and a hard fought 3-1 match victory. Morrison put up staggering numbers on the offensive end for the UW as she finished the match with 26 kills on a .550 hitting percentage. She was one of three Huskies to put up double-digit kills in the match. Seniors Sanja Tomasevic and Brie Hagerty put down 20 and 15 kills of their own respectively. Washington out hit the Cardinal .355 to .247 in the four-game match. Defensively, Stanford had two players with 18 digs on the evening, as both Courtney Schultz and Kristin Richards managed the feat. While Saturday may have been an easier victory for the Huskies than most would have imagined, the winning streak was put on the line the night before as California (12-3, 5-1) pushed the UW to five games. The Golden Bears took an early 1-0 lead in the match as they ended Washington's school-record 36-game winning streak in the 30-26 game one loss. However, the Huskies were able to respond in game two as they tied the match with a 30-28 victory over Cal. In game three, the tables turned again as the Golden Bears came away with a close 30-27 victory as the UW hit just .071 as a team in the game. In games four and five though, Washington showed why it is ranked second in the nation, closing out the match with 30-20 and 15-10 victories to win 3-2. The match ended with a total of 33 ties and 11 lead changes on the night. Tomasevic, Hagerty and Morrison once again led a powerful Washington attack as the triumvirate once again had double-digit kills in the match. Tomasevic led both teams with 25, while Hagerty added 23 and Morrison chipped in 17 of her own. Defensively, senior Candace Lee and junior Courtney Thompson put on quite a display as they finished with a combined 47 digs in the match. Lee had 27 digs while Thompson had 20. On the California side of the net, the Huskies were able to keep outside hitter Angie Pressey in check as they held her to just 12 kills on a negative .022 hitting-percentage. Even though their match-winning streak was snapped, the Huskies came out of California unscathed. They were tested, but once again were victorious. The Huskies return to action next weekend as they face UCLA and USC next weekend at Hec Edmonson Pavilion.
