Vlaski, Slovic and Chu go for indiviual tennis titles

For most of the Washington men's tennis team, the season came to an end with the Sweet 16 loss to Virginia last Saturday. However, for Alex Vlaski, Alex Slovic and Daniel Chu the season will continue when the NCAA individual championships begin today. The trio of Huskies will each be making a repeat performance to the NCAA tournaments as all three participated in the event last year. This year it is taking place in College Station, Texas, from today until the final Monday. Vlaski will be playing for the singles title for his fourth time in as many seasons at the UW. He is 6-3 in his career at the event with his best finish at the championships coming as a sophomore, when he lost in the semi-finals to Amer Delic of Illinois -- who went on to win the championship. Entering the field as the eighth seed, Vlaski's first round match will take place at 9 a.m. against 49th-ranked freshman Greg Ouellette of Florida. Slovic will be pulling double duty in this year's tournament, as he will be competing for both the singles and doubles crown. As a freshman last season, Slovic made it to the second round before being ousted by Florida's Hamid Mirzadeh in round number two. Coming in as a low seed this season, Slovic will go up against fourth-seeded Catalin Gard of Mississippi at 9:30 a.m. In the doubles draw, the 18th-ranked team of Slovic and Chu will face Luiz Carvalho and Jose-Carlos Pinto of Mississippi State -- who are currently ranked No. 29. Chu is making his second appearance in the doubles field last time he teamed up with Vlaski last season, losing in the first round.
