Washington's women golfers tee off at NCAA tournament

In its seventh season qualifying for a shot at the NCAA Championships, the Washington women's golf team travels a short distance down the west coast this week to play in Sunriver, Ore. The 10th-ranked Huskies are looking to improve on their last two finishes. In its last two events, the UW finished eighth at the NCAA east regionals and sixth at the Pac-10 championships. In the championships last season, Washington rallied to finish sixth, highest in program history. The event will be played at the Meadows Course at the Sunriver Resort and will consist of 72 holes over four days. The field is made up of the top eight finishers in each of the three NCAA regionals, accounting for 24 teams. The UW has made the field in four of the last five years. The lineup for the Huskies will include juniors Paige Mackenzie and Sung Ea Lee, freshman Kim Shin and sophomores Amber Prange and Courtney McCracken. All five players will compete each day, with the top four scores from each round counting for the team's total.. Prange has been the surprise of the postseason for Washington. She has led the UW in both the east regionals and the Pac-10 championships, finishing in the top 20 in each event. Mackenzie leads the team with a stroke average of 73.78. She is on pace to break the single-season 74.1 stroke average record she set last year. The Huskies take to the course today at 9 a.m.
