Swinging for a bid to the championships, the Washington women's golf team takes to the course today in the NCAA East Regionals.
The eighth-ranked Huskies are seeded third out of 21 teams in the field all vying for a top-eight finish and a spot in the 2005 NCAA championships.
After a disappointing finish in the Pac-10 championships two weeks ago, the UW is looking to step it up against some of the best competition in the country.
"We were really disappointed because we felt like we had an opportunity to win the (Pac-10) tournament going in," coach Mary Lou Mulflur said. "It was really frustrating to not get the job done."
There are six other teams besides Washington ranked in the top-20, including top-ranked Duke, No. 6 Pepperdine, No. 10 Ohio State, No. 11 Florida, No. 13 Tulane and No. 19 Furman.
Pepperdine is one of the only familiar opponents to the Huskies in the tournament, having played against them in several tournaments this season.
"We are in the east [regional] so we don't see most of [the other teams]," Mulflur said. "We don't come east and they don't come west."
Not knowing the other opponents does not worry the Huskies because golf is an individual game anyways, Mulflur said.
"You are not playing each other -- you are really just out there trying to do the best that you can against the golf course," she said. "It is not like you are playing someone head-to-head. We just have to stick to our game, take care of ourselves and not worry about what anyone else is doing because you can't control it."
Among the individual competitors are seven players in the top-20 nationally, including Washington's Paige Mackenzie at 17th. Duke will send the No. 2 and 3 players in the nation onto the course in Brittany Lang and Elizabeth Janangelo respectively.
"It is going to be interesting because it is a course that we have never played before," Mulflur said. "We just need to stick to our game plan and take of our business and we will be fine."
The tournament begins today with tee times starting at 8:40 a.m.
