Women's volleyball team works to continue winning streak

The second-ranked Washington women's volleyball squad hopes to keep its impressive winning streak alive this weekend as it faces No. 13 Arizona and Arizona State at Hec Ed Pavilion. The Huskies (10-0 overall, 1-0 Pac-10) have vanquished opponents with ease so far this season, sweeping each of the 10 matches they have played. This weekend will offer a test as the UW takes on its second ranked opponent of the season in the Wildcats (10-1, 2-0), who have won six straight. First up though is Arizona State (6-6, 1-1) tonight. The Sun Devils have lost both matches they have played thus far against top-25 teams and are coming off of a split against the two Oregon schools last weekend. The ASU offense features a balanced attack with three players averaging over 2.5 kills per game. Margie Giordano leads the team with an average of 3.15 kills per game. Washington leads the all-time series between the two teams 21-17. Arizona will arrive in Seattle looking to rebound from the two losses it suffered at the hands of the Huskies last season. Kim Glass and Jennifer Abernathy lead a high-octane Wildcat offense. Glass is averaging 4.42 kills per game while Abernathy chips in 4.28 kills per game of her own. Washington will be the fourth ranked team that Arizona has played so far this season. In those games, the Wildcats are 2-1, defeating both No. 20 Georgia Tech and No. 18 UC- Santa Barbra while losing in four games to No. 25 Santa Clara. Two Husky milestones could be achieved by the end of the weekend. If Sanja Tomasevic racks up seven digs over the two games, it would make the senior the fifth person in Washington history to record 1,000 digs and 1,000 kills in their career. Setter Courtney Thompson currently sits No. 2 on the all-time assist leaders list for the UW and needs just 25 digs to break the career record. The junior has broken the single-season record each of the last two seasons and is currently ranked second nationally with 14.97 per contest.
