A spoonful of CBD helps the pain go away
Imagine living with chronic inflammation or anxiety, or dealing with the chronic pain associated with cancer or HIV. Now imagine a single medication that could help manage, if not help heal, all of these problems. Don’t think it exists? It does, and you’ve most likely already heard of or tried it. We’re talking about cannabis, particularly two cannabinoids called THC and CBD. Cannabis, which you might call marijuana, pot, or weed, is one of the most common drugs for people to encounter in college. But it’s also a drug that can help mitigate many medical issues.

Collegi-ATE: Aphrodisiacs
Aphrodisiacs are substances known to increase libido when eaten, but they don’t have to come in some crazy artificial pill form. You can actually increase libido with the types of foods you eat and whether or not they have aphrodisiac compounds in them.

‘Ty Segall,’ Ty Segall
Since his first self-titled album came out in 2007, Ty Segall has graduated from being a kid drummer/guitarist/vocalist making great, experimental, garage music to becoming a legendary garage/psych rock icon. His participation in many side projects, as well as his track record of putting out at least one album per year for the last 10 years, has put him at the top of the food chain in his field.

Restaurant review: Rancho Bravo on the Ave
As someone who’s from Los Angeles, I pride myself on knowing good Mexican food. Just where I grew up in the San Fernando Valley, I can think of five different restaurants that have Mexican food better than I’ve ever experienced anywhere else, except maybe in Mexico, and that’s not even counting the pop-up street corner taquerias.

Song to start your week: ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,’ Gil Scott-Heron
Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, I watched brothers and sisters of mine in pain and despair on the UW’s very own turf: A man was shot in Red Square during an anti-Milo Yiannopoulos protest Saturday. The following day, I was empowered with 175,000 others as we marched to keep the rights of women protected during the next four years of Donald Trump’s presidency.

Film review: ‘Hidden Figures,’ dir. Theodore Melfi
Upon watching the trailer for Theodore Melfi’s film, “Hidden Figures,” I made the mistake of dismissing the film as one overly caught up in Hollywood ideals. Although it seemed to be sincere in its mission to showcase the incredible story of three black women who transgressed social boundaries to create incredible careers for themselves at NASA, the general tone of the film seemed designed to appease movie-goers who want the traditional feel-good, happy ending.

Best Drama TV of 2016: “Stranger Things,” season 1
2016 represented many things, including a fear of the foreign — it was facing inconceivable monsters in the face and the sentiment of wanting to retreat to a simpler time of the past.

The Take: Chrismukkah
I grew up Jew-ish; both my parents were Jews by blood, but we weren’t very religious. So when I was a kid, we only celebrated a few Jewish holidays a year: Hanukkah, Passover, and Rosh Hashana.

TV review: ‘Westworld,’ episodes 6-10
Five weeks ago, I reviewed the first half of creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan’s HBO show, “Westworld.” I alluded to the ability of the show to give us a storyline filled with science fiction tropes while never allowing it to feel slow, uninteresting, or boring. I mentioned that the show is able to generate questions and complications without burying them so far deep that it seems to viewers they may be left unanswered.

Food fight: No turkey, no tofurky, just veggies
I’ve never been a passionate vegetarian or vegan the way some of my friends are. In fact, I don’t label myself as a vegetarian or a vegan at all. Although some non-meat-eaters would strike me down for saying so, I’m not entirely morally opposed to eating meat so long as it’s locally sourced.
